My Speaker season continues with a new and exciting appointment: the 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah, which will take place in Tavarnelle di Cortona (AR) this weekend, on April 5th and 6th, 2025. After a month of March that saw two highly successful events – the opening with the Gran Fondo Bassa Valdichiana and the electrifying experience of the 2025 UEC BMX European Cup in Verona – I am ready to face a month of April that promises to be just as intense and full of important events. The Gran Fondo del Syrah indeed marks the beginning of a new chapter in this stimulating season, promising a weekend of sport and passion in the heart of beautiful Tuscany.

  4. Conclusion.

1. Gran Fondo del Syrah: 2nd Edition Sunday, April 6th, 2025
1.1 Cortona: A Tuscan Jewel of History, Art, and Breathtaking Views, the Ideal Stage for the Gran Fondo

Tavarnelle di Cortona, nestled like a gem among the rolling Tuscan hills, is the gateway to the renowned municipality of Cortona (AR), a place where history, art, and nature blend into a union of rare beauty. Long before the rumble of mountain bikes and the sporting challenge, this territory exudes an ancient and evocative charm. Its roots run deep into the Etruscan and Roman eras, leaving indelible traces on the landscape and architecture.

Ascending towards the heart of Cortona, one is enveloped by the enchanting atmosphere of its medieval historic center. A labyrinth of cobblestone streets winds among imposing noble palaces, historically rich churches, and artisan workshops that preserve ancient knowledge. Every corner reveals picturesque views and testimonies of a glorious past. From its panoramic terraces, the view opens majestically onto the Valdichiana, a succession of cultivated fields that create a landscape of incomparable harmony.

Choosing Tavarnelle di Cortona as the location for the Gran Fondo del Syrah is no coincidence. This territory offers a natural stage of extraordinary beauty, capable of enhancing the athletes’ efforts and providing unforgettable emotions for participants and spectators alike. The Gran Fondo thus becomes much more than a sporting competition: it transforms into a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the culture, history, and breathtaking views of one of Tuscany’s pearls. The logistical heart of the event will be the Polisportiva Val di Loreto, a multi-functional facility perfectly suited to host events of this caliber. Equipped with a bar, kitchen, large halls, and sports facilities including a football field, a five-a-side football field, and a skating rink, the Polisportiva Val di Loreto represents the ideal reference point for athletes, companions, and the public, guaranteeing adequate services and spaces for optimal hospitality. Its strategic location in Tavarnelle di Cortona makes it easily accessible and functional for managing a complex event like a Gran Fondo. The choice of this location underscores the organizers’ attention to providing a comfortable and complete experience for all participants.

1.2 A Journey into Taste: Local Products and Traditions, a Treasure to Discover in Cortona (AR)

Cortona and its fertile territory represent a true treasure trove of food and wine excellence, the result of a millenary history and a passion passed down from generation to generation. Syrah, a noble grape variety that has found an ideal habitat in these hills, is the undisputed protagonist, giving rise to red wines of extraordinary elegance, structure, and complexity, proudly bearing the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) Cortona designation. The Gran Fondo thus becomes a privileged opportunity not only to challenge one’s sporting limits but also to embark on an authentic sensory journey to discover the genuine flavors of this land.

During the event weekend, the territory will come alive with unique aromas and flavors. It will be a pleasure to immerse oneself in the tasting of extra virgin olive oil, with its intense fruity and slightly spicy taste, a fundamental element of the Mediterranean diet and the main condiment of local cuisine. The tables will be laden with Tuscan cured meats with an unmistakable flavor, the result of ancient processing and aging techniques, such as finocchiona, Cinta Senese salami, and soppressata.

Cheese lovers will not be able to resist pecorino cheese, available in various ages, from fresh and delicate to more flavorful and intense, an expression of the richness of local pastures. And to conclude on a sweet note, the traditional Cortonese desserts will conquer even the most demanding palates, with simple but flavorful recipes, often linked to festivities and ancient peasant traditions, such as cantucci biscuits accompanied by Vin Santo.

But the food and wine experience in Cortona is not limited to tasting the products. It is a true immersion in local traditions, made of conviviality, respect for the land, and the rhythms of nature. During the Gran Fondo weekend, it will be possible to meet local producers, visit farms and wineries, listen to their stories, and discover the secrets of artisanal production rooted in history. This synergy between sport and gastronomy offers added value to the event, transforming it into a multi-sensory experience that involves body and spirit, leaving an indelible memory in the hearts and palates of the participants.

1.3 A weekend of emotions: the detailed program of the 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah

The 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah has been conceived as a true mountain bike festival, with a rich program of events that will animate Tavarnelle di Cortona throughout the weekend of April 5th and 6th. The goal is to involve not only athletes but also families and enthusiasts, offering a complete experience dedicated to sport and conviviality.

Saturday, April 5th: space for young talents and fun

Saturday will be dedicated to the new generations of off-road cycling and the promotion of sport among the youngest:

  • 3:00 PM: “Top Class” regional race for Beginners (Esordienti) and Juniors (Allievi). This event represents a crucial moment for young talents in Tuscan off-road cycling. The competition, reserved for the Beginners (13-14 years old) and Juniors (15-16 years old) categories, is not only a showcase for their abilities but is also valid for the awarding of valuable points for the Italian Cycling Federation’s national championships. Attending this race means being able to admire up close the passion and determination of the future champions of mountain biking.
  • 5:00 PM: Demonstration gymkhana for school children. Saturday afternoon will conclude with a moment of pure fun dedicated to the youngest. The gymkhana is a course with simple and safe obstacles, designed to introduce school children to the world of mountain biking in a playful and stimulating way. This non-competitive activity aims to promote physical activity and help young people discover the pleasure of cycling in a festive and welcoming environment.

Sunday, April 6th: the highlight of the Event with the Gran Fondo and the Classic Route

Sunday will be the day dedicated to the most challenging races and the excitement of the Gran Fondo:

10:00 AM: Official start of the 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah and the Classic Route. The beating heart of the event will be concentrated on Sunday morning, with the joint start of the two main routes.

  • The Gran Fondo del Syrah, with its 41 kilometers and a significant elevation gain of 1500 meters, is designed for the most experienced and trained cyclists, eager to tackle a technically demanding course that will test their endurance and riding skills.
  • The Classic Route, with its 29 kilometers and an elevation gain of 900 meters, represents a more accessible but equally fascinating option, ideal for those who want to enjoy a day of sport immersed in the beauty of the Cortona landscape, without facing the most extreme slopes of the Gran Fondo.

Both races will offer participants the opportunity to cross breathtaking scenery and experience an unforgettable sporting event. The single start will create an atmosphere of great excitement and enthusiasm, kicking off a day dedicated to the passion for mountain biking.

1.4 Gran Fondo del Syrah: The Beating Heart of a High-Level Event

2° Gran Fondo del Syrah 2025

2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah 2025

The true focus of this highly anticipated sporting weekend is represented by the two competitions that will take place on Sunday, April 6th, designed to welcome mountain bike enthusiasts with different levels of athletic preparation. The Gran Fondo del Syrah, with its demanding and technically stimulating course, is the ideal challenge for the most trained athletes eager to compete on a route of considerable physical and scenic commitment. The Classic, while presenting lower mileage and elevation gain, still offers a rewarding experience immersed in the beauty of the Cortona territory.

This year, the edition promises to be of the highest competitive level, thanks to the participation of many prominent figures from the national mountain bike scene. Among the most anticipated names is the outgoing champion, Stefano Valdrighi (Bottecchia Factory Team), who arrives in Cortona as the winner of the past edition, the first, also strong from a recent victory at the Gran Fondo dell’Argentario and will be accompanied by his teammate Filippo Bertone, again on the podium in Porto Santo Stefano (GR) as in Città della Pieve (PG), both demonstrating excellent physical condition. Certainly contending for the victory will be the competitive duo from Rolling Bike, with Vincenzo Saitta, winner of the 11th Gran Fondo Bassa Valdichiana 2025, and Emanuele Spica, second in 2024 at the Gran Fondo del Syrah, highly talented athletes ready to battle. Not to be outdone are Mattia Toccafondi (DMT Racing Bike by Marconi), a luxurious outsider who could very well insert himself into the fight for the top positions, and Nicola Furiasse (Biking Racing Team), recently graduated, who we remember finished third overall here in Tavarnelle di Cortona (AR) in 2024.

Behind the perfect success of this national-level event is a meticulous and passionate organization, curated by Team Bike Syrah Cortona, the true driving force of the event. Fundamental is also the valuable collaboration of Ciclo Club Quota Mille, which brings its experience and know-how in the organization of cycling events. The Gran Fondo del Syrah also enjoys the prestigious patronage of the Municipality of Cortona, the Regional Council of Tuscany, and the Italian Cycling Federation, testifying to the sporting and territorial value of the initiative. Important support also comes from Cortona Doc, which emphasizes the strong link between the event and the excellences of the territory. Finally, a crucial role is played by Gs Ossaia and Polisportiva Val di Loreto, the latter hosting the logistics of the entire event with its efficient structure, guaranteeing adequate services and spaces for athletes and companions. The synergy between all these entities demonstrates a common commitment to promoting sport, the territory, and its excellences.

1.5 Discovering the Cortona heart: an exciting journey through nature, history, and sporting challenge

The routes of the 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah have been meticulously designed to offer a 360-degree mountain biking experience, enhancing the variety and beauty of the Cortona territory. Participants will find themselves immersed in a succession of breathtaking scenery, pedaling through the lush countryside characterized by expanses of vineyards that produce the prized Syrah, venturing into shady woods that offer pleasant refreshment, and traveling along panoramic roads from which to admire the gentle Tuscan hills.

The excitement will begin immediately after the start from Tavarnelle, with a suggestive passage through the historic heart of Cortona. This unprecedented foray among the ancient walls and history-laden streets will offer a unique and unforgettable image, ideally uniting the sporting effort with the cultural richness of the territory.

After leaving the charm of the historic center, the route will gradually climb towards the first goal of the day: the Gran Premio della Montagna (King of the Mountains) located on the summit of Monte Sant’Egidio, reachable at an altitude of 1056 meters. This ascent will represent the first real challenge for the athletes, testing their climbing abilities and endurance. However, conquering the summit will be amply rewarded by a 360-degree panorama that will sweep over the Valdichiana and the surrounding hills, offering a priceless view.

From Sant’Egidio, the route will become more dynamic and varied, alternating flowing and fast stretches ideal for recovering energy, with fun downhill single tracks that will require agility and riding skills. These trails, partly restored and enhanced thanks to the work of volunteers from the sports association, will wind through the undergrowth, providing thrills and adrenaline.

It is important to note that, following recent weather conditions, the route has undergone some slight modifications to ensure safety and rideability. However, the organizers have worked diligently to preserve the essence of the original route, maintaining a length of 41 km with a total elevation gain of 1520 meters for the Gran Fondo, which therefore remains a significant test for the athletes. The Classic route, while less demanding, will partly follow the same route, still offering panoramic views of great beauty and a rewarding off-road experience.

In summary, the route of the 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah is a skillful mix of challenging climbs, technical descents, and scenic stretches, designed to test athletes but also to give them an unforgettable immersion in the nature and history of the Cortona territory.

1.6 Hall of Fame

Being only the second edition, the Gran Fondo del Syrah is writing its history. However, the quality of the athletes registered this year, with prominent names from the national scene, foreshadows a compelling competition and a hall of fame that will be enriched with prestigious names.

The inclusion of the Gran Fondo del Syrah in the prestigious Prestigio circuit of MTB Magazine 2025 represents a milestone of absolute importance, consecrating the event among the twelve most renowned races at the national level in the mountain bike scene. Being part of this exclusive calendar is a seal of quality that attests to the organizational excellence, the spectacular nature of the routes, and the high level of participation that the Gran Fondo del Syrah is able to attract.

The Prestigio 2025 circuit is a true journey through Italy, with a calendar that runs from Sunday, March 23rd to Sunday, October 12th, touching some of the most iconic and challenging locations for off-road cycling enthusiasts. To aspire to the coveted Prestigio shield, athletes will have to demonstrate consistency and preparation, as it is necessary to participate in at least six of the twelve scheduled events. A further distinctive element of the circuit is the requirement to complete the long courses of the individual events, underlining the physical and technical commitment required to compete at the highest levels.

However, the Prestigio circuit also shows attention to specific categories of athletes: women and those over 65 will also have the opportunity to choose to compete on the medium courses of the races, offering them an opportunity to still compete within the circuit, albeit facing slightly shorter distances and elevation gains.

The entry of the Gran Fondo del Syrah into this select group of events is a clear sign of the growth and prestige that the event has managed to achieve in a short time. 1.11 Voices from the territory: statements highlighting sporting, social, and territorial value

The statements released by key figures involved in the organization and patronage of the 2nd Gran Fondo del Syrah highlight the multifaceted nature and added value of this event, which goes far beyond a simple sporting competition.

Luciano Meoni, Mayor of Cortona (AR): “My first thanks,” declares the Mayor of Cortona Luciano Meoni, “goes to all the volunteers of the sports association who, in addition to organizing a high-level event, contribute to the maintenance of the trails in the Cortona mountains for the benefit of the entire population and the many visitors who are passionate about trekking and cycling. On this occasion, we also presented the new signage that we will inaugurate after the event.

Silvia Spensierati, Councillor for Sport: “An event that combines sport with the promotion of local excellences,” declares the Councillor for Sport, Silvia Spensierati, “this aspect is also central for us, and this great participation is proof that the initiative was well conceived. 2. The role of the Speaker in a Mountain Bike Gran Fondo

Being a Speaker at a Gran Fondo means much more than announcing starts and finishes. My task is to give voice to the Event, narrating every moment with energy, passion, and the right level of engagement.

2.1 What Does a Speaker Do During a Mountain Bike Gran Fondo?
  • Welcomes athletes and the public: From the early hours of the morning, I create the right atmosphere with useful information and a charge of enthusiasm.
  • Manages the start: Grid formation, countdown, final advice, and then go! The tension dissolves and adrenaline takes over.
  • Narrates the race progress: Real-time updates, names of leading riders, gaps, unexpected events… the public must feel inside the action!
  • Animates the finish: The most emotional part! I celebrate the winners and give space to all the athletes who cross the finish line, because every achievement deserves the right recognition.
  • Interviews protagonists and organizers: Gathering live testimonies makes the event even more engaging and memorable.
  • Awards ceremonies: Presents the winners, highlights their commitment, and emphasizes the rankings. It is the most solemn moment, where the Speaker knows how to transform a simple prize giving into an epic celebration.
2.2 Awards Ceremonies: the Grand Finale of the Event

After an intense race, it’s time to celebrate the best athletes! The awards ceremony is always an exciting moment, where the overall winners, race categories, and special prizes are called to the podium. The Speaker leads the awards ceremony with professionalism and enthusiasm, thanking athletes, organizers, and sponsors, and leaving everyone with a special memory of the event.

2.3 The value of the voice

A Speaker is not just a narrator, but a motivator. There are moments of fatigue, crisis, and glory, and the way they are told can make all the difference. Giving the right tone to every situation helps create an unforgettable experience for everyone.

2.4 Technologies and tools for perfect audio

To ensure clear and powerful sound, which is fundamental for my role as a speaker and for the overall experience of the event, it is crucial to have the right equipment:

  • Quality microphones for a clear voice without interference, essential for communicating effectively with the public and athletes even in dynamic contexts.
  • High-performance audio systems, with optimal sound diffusion to reach every corner of the race area, from the start/finish zone to the key points of the course.
  • Careful management of the audio mix, to balance my voice with background music, organizer announcements, and any interviews, avoiding annoying overlaps and ensuring clear and intelligible communication.

An interesting aspect? Many events choose to rent professional audio systems to ensure impeccable performance. If you are organizing an event and want quality technical support, mauro.rent is the ideal solution! Back to Menu
